Summer Time with Mom & Dad

June 30, 2016  •  2 Comments

We said goodbye to E7 and wished her well on her adventures. Summer was just right around the corner. E8 was and still is at CROW getting better each day. Mom & Dad , well they have been resting after all that they have been through this season. Boy what a season it was. But now it's time to finish up their molting and rest up for the next season . Of course there is still the big question of will they or won't they rebuild the nest in the nest tree of 10 years.

I personally don't see any reason why not. There's nothing wrong with the tree, Harriet has been here for 10yrs. She still stays in the nest tree as well does Dad. They are just on " Vacation" right now. Soon something will click and they'll start bringing in rails for the nest. It will be quite interesting to see how they start off in building a nest from scratch. Where does the first branch go? How do they get it to stay up there ? Do they layer sticks then grass then sticks or is it all sticks somehow interlocking and laying on top of each other to make a foundation?  I mean I have an idea of how it should go but is it their way of doing it? Here's a link that shows how we humans start and build a nest...... http://www.fs.fed.us/rm/pubs_rm/rm_rn535.pdf  Here's another with a video. Now this was a man made nest to attract a pair there to hopefully nest.http://www.incredibleworld.ca/index.php/incredibstew/baldeagles . Again it gives us an idea how we start one. There's no need for anyone to do this for them. They are very capable of doing it on their own. If Ozzie and Harriet could do it so can Harriet and Dad. I mean after all some seem to think they might have built somewhere else and to do that they had to do what?? Yep start  from scratch.  So enough about the nest for now. There's still plenty of time and I'm not worried.

So we have seen that Harriet has already taken some time away to where she hasn't be seen for about 2 1/2  weeks. This is ok. She and Dad are still molting and it takes a lot out of them and from what I have been told by bird owners, it hurts a bit too. Watching the Eaglets as they are getting their feathers in they seem so darn cranky at times don't they? So staying somewhere close by but not at the nest area is ok. Now it seems to possibly be Dad's turn. We'll see here in a few days or so.

I was really hoping to take the whole summer off this year but nature had other plans for our family and me. With E8 at CROW recouping and growing stronger by the day and now that the nest is gone I'm waiting ,watching to see when they start on the nest and for the day E8 gets to come home or at least released close by. How will that go? Well I hope E8 is released at the nest pasture and  E8 will hang around a bit. How will Mom & Dad react ? Well if it's not nesting season when E8 is released , there's is a chance they will tolerate E8 being around if he stays . I have seen other Juvies stop by before nesting season/ eggs in the nest and Mom & Dad didn't seem to bother with them. Will they know E8 as one of theirs ? I would like to think so but they could just see him/her as just another youngin in the area.

So that's a quick update of what has been happening so far. It's been an uneventful summer so far. Of course we still have about 2-3 more months to go before fall starts to set in and nesting season begins again. Wow season 5 will be here before we know it and it all starts over again.
